Intestinal IQ: Intestinal
Permeability & Inflammation

Although the term “Leaky Gut” has been used for years to describe all manner of issues relating to how people feel, it’s only recently that the scientific community discovered that there’s actually a biomarker in our body that, together with its related family of peptides, controls the tight junctions of our gut so that, to put it bluntly: The good stuff goes into our bloodstream and the bad stuff stays out. Everyone is affected by it to one degree or another. It’s called Zonulin and it’s revolutionary.

The Intestinal IQ test for intestinal permeability measuring levels of Zonulin and its related family of peptides (Zonulin FP), is the cornerstone of our Intestinal iQ™ series of wellness tests. We’re proud to have been the first to develop and introduce this specific test to North America.

Zonulin is a protein that modulates the permeability of tight junctions between cells of the digestive tract wall. Zonulin, and its family of peptides, are found within intestinal cells and, interestingly, its production and release mimic the effect of certain bacterial toxins. Once triggered, Zonulin plays an important role in the creation of what we think of as gut “leakiness.”

Too much Histamine in our system may be a result of its release from storage in the body, as part of our inflammatory and allergic processes. It may also be due to the intake of foods rich in histamine-creating substances such as alcohol, chocolate, pickled foods, as well as certain fish and seafood. But it may also be due to its insufficient breakdown by the body’s primary enzyme responsible for this action, DAO, which is found primarily in our gut. Although DAO activity does not depend on itself alone, measuring its levels plays an important part in understanding the phenomenon of histamine excess.
In addition to our test for Permeability, the cornerstone of our Intestinal iQ™ series, this test adds a critical layer of information by also measuring for Inflammation in the gut, analyizing levels of Histamine, Diamine Oxidase as well as providing the ratio between the two.

This test analyzes levels of: Zonulin and its related family of peptides (Zonulin FP), Histamine, Diamine Oxidase (DAO), The Histamine:DAO Ratio
Sample collection method: Dried blood spot

EHA Test Information

Epigenetics is the science that shows we do not need to be victims of our genetic inheritance. The Human Genome Project, was expected to confirm the existence of over 100,000 individual genes.

However, it was discovered that only 23,000 genes make up the human genome, barley more than the common fruit fly and far less that those found in a grain of rice.

This raised the question of what else could be controlling the gene expression?

The answer is Epigenetics, which is the interaction between environmental signals and the process of adaptation that living systems thrive.

Today, we know that gene expression that is not mediated by coding DNA, representing only 2% of the genomic expression.  It is rather influenced by informational signals received from the environment by non-coding DNA, which represent the remaining 98% of what is referred to as junk DNA.

This type of test allows us to understand the interactions and impacts. Gives a whole picture of what is happening in the body.

Metabolic IQ: Advanced Stress &
Hormone Profile

Whether we’re seeking to understand our levels of key hormonal markers, or gauging where we’re at in our immune and metabolic status, seeking to balance them all is not always so easy. So, here’s a convenient, comprehensive test focusing on the fundamental sex hormones, as well as key markers of immune and metabolic function, that goes a step towards keeping us moving forward…in balance.
Measuring both fasting and non-fasting insulin gives the clearest picture of the body’s ability to make insulin, as well as its ability to use it to keep glucose in normal levels.

Fasting insulin is used chiefly to measure levels related to diabetes and insulin resistance. The latter is a condition in which the cells in muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin, leading to a greater difficulty by those cells to take up glucose from the blood.

Non- fasting insulin is used to determine the cause of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), as well as to diagnose or monitor insulin resistance. In saliva, insulin levels vary with type of meal and sample collection time. These levels may be elevated in cases of insulin resistance and have been found to be an accurate screening tool for identifying those at risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease later in life. The Metabolic IQ Advanced Stress and Hormone Profile measures both fasting and non- fasting insulin levels.

The salivary Advanced Stress and Hormone Profile, can be used in assessing hormonal and immune balance, as well as chronic stress, stress-related disorders and those with developmental signs of ‘metabolic syndrome ‘ – an imbalance that includes increases in blood pressure, blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

This test analyzes levels of: Diurnal Cortisol (AM, noon, afternoon, bedtime), DHEA-S, The Total Cortisol: DHEA-S ratio, Estradiol, Progesterone, The Estradiol:Progesterone ratio, Testosterone, Secretory IgA (SIgA), Melatonin (Daytime), as well as Fasting and Non-Fasting Insulin.
Sample collection method: Saliva
